The beloved tiger, Nawab is no more; in a territorial fight in the Dhikala Zone of Corbett National Park, this much-loved tiger lost his life. Nawab was only a year old and on Monday, May 28, the young tiger got into a fight with another tiger and was severely injured in his head and legs. According to Amit Verma, CTR, “The cub succumbed to injuries that he had received in the territorial fight. His skull was fractured, and hind and forelegs were also dislocated. We also found teeth marks of another tiger. We can cite the exact cause of death only after receiving the final report.” The forest department officials rescued him on Tuesday and sent him for medical treatment to Ranibagh Centre where the young tiger breathed his last. A funeral ceremony for Nawab was held on Thursday, May 31 where the forest officials bid an emotional goodbye to their beloved tiger. The body was cremated as per the guidelines of National Tiger Conservation Authority.
This is reckoned to be the seventh recorded tiger death in Uttarakhand this year according to TOI news report. Of the seven deaths, three were reported from CTR. Earlier, on May 14, a six-year-old tigress died in Almora forest division. On May 10, a two-year-old tigress cub was found dead in Shyampur range of Haridwar forest division close to the Rajaji Tiger Reserve. On May 5, another body of a tiger was found in Corbett’s Kalagarh forest division. On April 29, a 5-year-old tigress was found dead in Surpudali range of Corbett Tiger Reserve. A patrolling team on March 29, 2018, found a body of the 2-year-old tigress in Pipal padav area of Bhakhra forest ranges of Terai-Central forest division. Also in the month of January, a tiger was found dead in the Ramnagar forest division.
