CALANGUTE: Goan Warriors Sports Club, Assonora advanced to the quarterfinals of the Calangute Panchayat Soccer Cup, organised by Calangute Association, after getting the better of PVC Parra Sports Club 2-1 at Poriat grounds, here on Wednesday.
The closely fought inaugural match saw Goan Warriors go into the breather with a two goals cushion.
In the 15th minute, it was Parra colts who had the first good attempt at the rival goal but a fierce strike by Ashton Fernandes was blocked by Assonora keeper Aaron Gonsalves. Overlapping Savio Vaz still had a chance to inflict damage on the rivals but he was little late to connect the rebound.
While Parra failed to score, at the other end a curling corner by Kunal Salgaonkar was headed into the goal by Goa Warriors’ Projot Arabekar, 1-0.
Parra should have equalised five minutes later but this time Atish Mirajkar was a bit late to connect off a fumble from keeper Aaron off Flyod Pereira’s free kick.
A couple of minutes before the breather and Goan Warriors netted their second goal through an intelligent lob by Milind Shinde over the advancing Parra keeper Fidelis, 2-0.
On crossing over, Parra colts pressed hard to get back into the match but managed to only reduce the margin as Atish Mirajkar after getting hold to a through-pass scored with a neat placement, 2-1.
Earlier at the start of the match, Calangute Association president Aliro Lobo and general secretary Filipe Dias introduced the chief guest Sudesh Mayekar, deputy sarpanch and panch members to the players and match officials.
